Effective Negotiation Skills

Lists of skills and techniques are helpful, but they can’t replace self-confidence and actual negotiating experience that are so valuable in negotiations. Don’t despair if you’re lacking in these. They’re helpful, not essential. If you’re nervous, it helps to remember that the other party may have the same feelings.  If the other party is deceptive, avoid them.

  • First, the obvious: Prepare!  Learn as much as you can about the other party’s needs, expectations, and personalities, as well as existing contracts, risks issues, your needs and bottom line…
    • Preparation builds self-confidence and helps you stay focused.

What Every Body is Saying“, by Joe Navarro, is one of the most useful books I have read about a skill that is so important to our relationships with other people. Navarro provides well researched information about nonverbal communication and explains how to quickly read a person’s body language.

body languageWhat makes this book stand out from others is that the information is organized and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand and apply. Navarro also covers how body language provides clues to deception, and dispels myths about the increasingly popular subject of detecting lies.

It’s estimated that 60% to 90% of our communication is nonverbal, depending on the topic. Read more
